I am planning to make a 20 to 30 Ton hydraulic press, about 750mm wide, with open sides. I want to use the existing steel that I have in my stockpile, among which is the remains of a 1960's industrial galvanised greenhouse.
I have channel for the crossmembers which is 4 * 2 by 1/2 inch (from the greenhouse).
My question is about the material for the 4 uprights, my options are:
2 * 2 by 1/4 inch angle (galvanised so will match the rest of the steel used).
50 * 10mm flat black steel (not from the greenhouse but left over from a railing job).
I would prefer to use the angle but I am not sure if it will be strong enough?
If someone has a similar press could they measure the steel used for the uprights. And what size are the holes in the uprights, looking at the ones available for sale they look either 20 or 25mm?
