Not sure of any companies that specifically that do work abroad, We get abroad every so often and its not all its cracked up to be, its great seeing new places at the companies expense, and you often get to see some places that most don't, but being away from home isn't fun, if you get used to the money then be ready for it to suddenly disappear should the economy change and you sometimes have to deal with ill equipped and people that claim they are trained in A,B and C but do not know their **** from their elbow.
John,
I work abroad on an equal time rotation (4 weeks away, 4 at home). We have some brilliant welders but they're from the Phillipines and are definitely NOT earning what a Brit would class as a small fortune (but I think it maybe is to them).
The problem with some of the further-off places is they get their pick of the world's workforce, at all price levels, so getting a foot in the door is very difficult.
Ive travelled for work for some years, but must be 15 since ive seen a brit welder abroad on any of the jobs Ive been on.
i suspect the rates in uk are higher now too. There may be work in holland for example, ive known a fair few guys over there.
The small forune you speak of is probably as hes working 6 days aweek for 10 or 12 weeks, and only home for a couple ....had this very conversation only yesterday in the local, some rich contract worker bought farm next door, tells the locals how much cash he makes, (figuers sound about right for an engineer working in korea of a construction project). I said yes but how often do you see him....3 maybe 4 times a year, while his mrs is at home lording it up and paying for their fat kit to have riding lessons as he has potential, by an ex Olympian. Course hes got potential, if shed daft enough to pay......
If your going abroad, your whole life changes, you become a visitor in your own home, you cant be there when expected, christmas, birthdays, wedding, funerals....ive worked various rotations, 4 and 4 is about the best. 5 and 3, 6 and 2.....
Crator creator is right, welding only youll struggle to get a toe in the door. Inspection, training, coaching, possibly.....
Another factor is back in the 70s and 80 s oil jobs were built or hooked up in situ, loads of welders etc, now they leave a yard in the far east complete, just need a few weeks hook up, final commissioning and start up.
