Quick question from a newby. Any concerns on damaging the auto electrics when welding on a car. Is it adaquate having the ground connect near the work or do I need to disconnet the battery or avoid altogether.
Disconect live battery terminal.
I have done work on trucks with very sophisticated electronics and they have survived undamaged. (with battery still connected)
But disconnect it to be safe.
It takes only a few seconds anyway.
Disconnected the battery negative terminal and did the deed. Welded in a brace to stabilize the steering idler arm on my pickup. Letting things cool, I'll fire her up tomorrow. The welds look good, tested on similar material to determine penetration I'm new to mig welding and I'm really impressed with the capability and ease of operation. Thanks for the quick reply folks.
Right after you have already had your qeustion answered with taking off the LIVE terminal..
To your qeustion, yes it can and will affect electronics such as the braking systems, Alternator etc..
I think at one time or another we have all started welding and then thought .....oh **** ! I haven`t disconnected anything. I know guys who have screwed the alternator.............the one on my truck is £300quid from Nissan.......could buy a nice little mig for that.lol
If you disconnect the live terminal and leave the earth connected when you reconnect the live you will get a spark which can ignite the battery gases !
I know cuz i did it LOL !
You would get he same spark which ever one you fitted last if any item was still switched on. You should always remove the earth lead first as it reduces the risk of a short from the spanner on the positive terminal to the body earth.
