I have an old SIP 170 gasless MIG on which the wire feed has become really unreliable. I want to replace it with a new gas MIG of a similar power. If I need to weld outside I now have the Motoinverter ARC set.
The MIG will be mostly for home use, probably on car bodywork in the future, so it will need to have a fairly low power setting. I am also unsure whether to go for an inverter, or a transformer type. The inverters look good as they are smaller, lighter, and use less mains current but maybe, as it will only be used occasionally, a transformer type might be more reliable long term?
So far I have been looking at the PortaMIG (a guy on one of the car forums seems to get really good results with this on bodywork and it goes down to 15 amps) and the Oxford MIGmaker for transformer types, and the Parweld and Crossarc for inverters.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
