Thanks for the replies.
A video I watched said to start with Arc as it is then easier to pick up the other types. A couple of things I'd like to do initially is weld a hydraulic thumb onto my excavator and also convert the base of a touring caravan into a trailer for the excavator.
Id suggest learning to walk before you try to run. Not sure what size excavator you have but Id not put a 3/4 ton one on a caravan chasis, they are not the strongest construction.
And welding the thumb on to the excavator will be most likley over head, unless you take it apart, which isnt an easy place to start.
I agree mig is easier to learn, but if your outside, or with a low budget stick s a very good option!
If you update your location, you may find someone near buy with the competencies to produce a quality weld overhead
Thanks for that advice.
I have an old caravan that I'll be getting rid of soon and somebody told me to keep the chassis for a trailer for a 1.8t digger. Is there no way of strengthening the chassis up or is it not worth it?
The welding of the thumb won't be over head, it would be in a vertical position. I would definitely practice before attempting that. If I'm not confident I'll get somebody experienced.
Seconded. I found it really difficult to do arc welding with cheap units (still do!) - I found it much easier to pick up MIG.I would say MIG is easier if I'm honest. Get a good auto darkening welding helmet makes a great difference also
The old buzz boxes were awful, the new inverter sets are much more user friendly, and in my opinion far easier to use.Seconded. I found it really difficult to do arc welding with cheap units (still do!) - I found it much easier to pick up MIG.
That said, I do agree that if you can master arc welding then the other processes are relatively easy!
