Not a myth regarding our 2001 Honda Civic which I bought new. We were in a road trip, and while out in the middle of nowhere the engine maintenance light came on; so I said a couple of foul words and immediately pulled over to the side of the road. Just before the trip I serviced the car so was quite concerned. Then my Wife pointed to the odometer, which read "exactly" ten thousand miles.TBH, there's all sorts of myths around - like the EML will come on if you go xxx miles over the service interval, well, maybe it will - but it's not forced on by lack of service, it's down to a fault on the vehicle - ....................................

My vivaro puts on the EML, Service (spanner) and glow plug lights as soon as you go through the service interval.Maintenance lights and warnings are a bit different to EML - EML is generally related to anything that causes a change in the emissions of an engine... It's practically the same symbol on every vehicle from a Fiat 500 to a Bentley Continental.
It should have zero to do with service intervals.

May be worth googling "service reset on XXXX" Mrs Robo had a Peugeot with the spanner symbol on the dash, found a Youtube video on which buttons to press in a certain sequence to reset itmines had the spanner showing for ages, maybe 5000k, did the last oil / diesel filter changes myself Don't have the right tool to reset the spanners, presume needs the diagnostic tools from peugeot. I tried with my generic OBD2 one, didn't reset, so just ignore it...

Exactly. Everything was rebuildable and didn't get thrown away for need of an overhaul. I blame 'sealed for life' which whilst of benefit in some instances just made things unrepairable. With the realisation that we are messing-up the world, perhaps repairable will be the new 'norm' (and without a workshop full of specialist tools).
The new norm ? I seriously doubt it, as you have to follow the money trail. It's kind of like the mantra of the pharmaceutical industry........ There is no profit in a cure, only in repeat business....................................
