Hi folks, while I'm not ready to start working on it yet, I decided to strip the nearside quarter panel of my project (my ae86 booter on the projects forum). It just so happened that a used quarter panel came up and I wasn't sure if I'd be better off replacing rather than repairing.
So 3 hours with a wire-wheel, heat gun and scraper later:
I measured about 2.5mm of filler over the vast majority of the panel.... There was also a fibreglass matting repair to the wheelarch which carried on corroding underneath...
Anyway, what I'm left with is the above...circled in orange is a high spot, in green is a low spot, in blue is a long dent/scrape in a low area, and in purple a low spot (I'm not overly worried about that last one as it's a small isolated area and Id be confident enough about repairing it).
I'm looking for pointers as regards how to proceed? Replacement quarter panels are both rare and expensive (the used one that came up has gone).
The area around the blue circle has signs of a side-swipe, is generally low, but has a long scrape.
I'm concerned that the steel has been well 'worked' above the arch in the green area, as it seems soft...
Also, I have a set of fibreglass arch extensions, just in case I make a balls of the arch
Any thoughts?
