I have a clarke(?) 190 buzz box which (supposedly) will vary from 50A (1.6mm rod) from 180A (4mm rods).
I'm (IMHO) pretty good with it - on 4-12mm thick plate!
I also own a 15 year old Ford Transit which has failed the MOT on the chassis and exhaust.
They holes only about an inch across, but chances are, they're gonna be 3 or 4 inches by the time I've cleaned them.
I have a VERY limited budget.
Am I wasting my time even thinking about stick welding it?
I'm quite prepared to spend a couple of hours practicing on some scrap 1mm - 2mm pieces, but I'll have to shell out for some 1.6mm rods.
Alternatively, I have a NU-Tool 180A (?) mig welder that I picked up for a fiver at the car boot sale.
It's got a reel of wire, and seems to spark up and feed OK, but there's no gas, and is "untested" as far as gas goes.
Even if the gas works, I reckon it's gonna cost me around 20 quid for the gas (2 hobby bottles - one to practice, one to do the welding).
I could *just about* run to 80 or 100 quid to have it welded for me - but would prefer to do it myself - if only so I can say I did.
I could also better spend the 100 quid on other toys - such as a "full size" gas bottle set-up for the mig welder, or a different half-decent second hand mig set with a full size bottle off the bay.
what to do? what to do?
