Hi forum
I have this elegant 1988 Daimler Double 6 in need of bodywork repairs:-
outer sills (have patches of welding + putty)
inner sills (detached from joining to the floorpan on the inside)
rear jacking points (looks like no strength behind the jacking points - a previous bodge)
rear wheelarch replacement (thin sheet work)
misc patching repairs to odd holes
My local friendly garage, who seem reasonable at £35/hr and are adept at welding, could still set me back some £2k - well beyond the worth of the car. I hence am resorting to getting a MIG welder to embark on this restoration myself. The articles here at the home page are very encouraging. I plan to post my progress on 'jag-lovers'.
For starters, I expect to be working with 18swg sheet steel (~1mm thick), possibly going up to ~3mm thick for the rear jacking point reinforcements. Judging by the techies exchanges I think I need at least a 150A unit? I prefer gas as gasless and the flux-cored wire put me off it.
I did have a MIG welder some years ago but did nothing more useful than setting a nearby bogroll on fire! Now I have a really worthwhile project to do I shall learn as I go along. Wish me luck.
