Hi to all.

Do you know some books worth reading about welding, or fabricating in general?

I'm searching something more focused on the "tricks of the trade" than
the theoretical part.

Something like "tried and true" ways to:
- square pieces
- suggestions on how to decide a welding sequence to keep parts straight
- fight distortion (my biggest problem )
- tack parts the smart way
- work with 3D frames and keep them to size
- etc

The long and the short of it is there's no book of experience out there. You can only use so much information after that your on autopilot and by fiximg mistakes you gain experience. Im sure there's books there but you will learn more by making the mistakes.

The long and the short of it is there's no book of experience out there.

It all comes down to experience in my book (pun intended), try and listen to some old time welders hopefully you'll pickup some tips.

Distortion doesn't have to be a problem if you allow for it, you can make it work for you. Example, I used to TIG weld "L" shaped arms for a laundry machine out of stainless box, we'd deliberately set them slightly over square so that as it cooled after welding it would pull itself square, but it's all but impossible to tell you exactly how much, as the pull would depend on the order you did the welds as well as the size of box etc etc

Practice makes perfect.
