Thought that you might like to see this welding bodge that I uncovered. Had to do a few jobs on a Land-Rover Defender that had failed its MOT. One was a rear wheel bearing with too much play. Jacked it up to wiggle the wheel to see how bad it was and noticed that there was also a lot of backlash in the diff (or so I thought). Took the end cap off the shaft so as to be able to remove the drive flange and was presented with this. Obviously the drive flange splines had stripped so someone decided to weld it to the shaft. This had subsequently broken through and allowed the shaft and the flange to turn by about 20 degrees before the two bits 'drove'. God knows how long it had been like that. The weld was mainly
only on one side of the shaft - can't see why whoever did this didn't spin the shaft 180 degrees and do the other half. Might have then had a fighting chance of lasting.
