Waste disposal

Afternoon all, having started up my flooring company a while back, things have picked up pretty quick and im now generating rubbish at quite an alarming rate. Not just the rubbish from offcuts of carpet and underlay, but people are asking me to dispose of their old carpets too.
The last chap i worked for had one of those big metal bins on wheels by his storage unit.
What i was wondering is if anyone has any experience with companies that provide said bins, or recommendations.

be careful if your taking away old carpets

your own is easy enough to get rid of

use skips that are sorted materials cardboard, plastic and underlay depends on the type you offer

really loverly insulation under your feet

but you can recycle as the company above does recycle materials

Precise opposite locally.

A commercial operator disposing of carpet - Trade Waste to be paid for.
So local suppliers ask the householder to drop the old carpet off at the 'Civic Amenity Site' - domestic, so free. Otherwise they charge a disposal fee on top of supply and fit.

I used to have them come and 'fit' old carpet to my garage. When it got dirty I took it to the 'Civic Amenity Site' as domestic waste. They were happy to replace it with more old carpet!

Bins won't last long with old carpets

Look into waste carrier licencing mate.
Don't want to get caught out on that one.
Once you have that you can use commercial tips.
Save up for a sizable amount as billed to the nearest tonne. Rounded up

If you're taking waste that does not originate from you, you should get a carriers licence. They're not massive money, and, iirc, last 3 years. Compared to the stress of not having one if you're collared, I suspect it's worth it.

From memory, about £150 for 3 years, but it may vary on waste type, I guess.

...also makes you look more 'pro' to your customer, and may enable you to add a charge for their waste disposal (as you're a registered carrier, all above board, etc. etc.)

Transfer station is going to be around £130 a tonne I think, once you've got your carrier's license. Haven't checked prices in a while so it might be more now.

Cheers chaps ill look in to both. From an internet search its a case of filling in forms and waiting for people to call back

depends how much work you do...I now have a yard and have two permanent 10 cube skips and get them emptied every few weeks. Before that i rented 2 very cheap lock-ups and filled them to the rafters with rubbish and every time they got full i orded 2 skips and 2 young lads to fill the skips and get them moved the same day, this method worked well for years

At the moment its just a sideline business. I found one company that charged £14 plus vat to empty a 660l bin/skip whatever its called. But not sure if that would be big enough

You'll do well to get one living room carpet plus underlay into one of those unless you cut it up very well.

We used to cut the carpet in to strips about as wide as the bin when i worked for the other chap. But i think his bin was the next size up.

Not going to adapt one of your chippers to do that then Bob and sell the stuff to your missus?

There is always demand for the surfaces for riding schools,
I dont know if a wood chipper or something could be used to shred carpet and underlay?
If you could mix it in with some chopped up sofa foam and a bit of dry sand you should be able to sell the stuff in bags easy enough.
You would have to make sure it didn't have and nails or tacks in it though.

One advantage, as you would be using the old carpets to make a new product then they would not be waste so you would not need a carriers licence to take them away from the customer.

Local scrapman got pulled for taking batteries to weigh in as his licence isn't for them its for cars! Just keep an eye on the ball. Local house clearance bloke gives underlay etc away free as packaging, shifts loads to the Ebayers.

Some great info here guys! Have found a company that sells the recycled carpet fibres so going to contact them tomorrow. Only in Northampton but if i went with a van load it could be worthwhile.
Underlay for packaging is a good idea, hadnt thought of that

They might not offer you anything for it, they will know you will have to pay to get rid of it otherwise.
If you get them to give you a receipt for £1 per ton or something then you are not carring waste if you do get pulled over.
