new here, and just got my econotig welder, just wondering what the differences are with using filler metals and not using them? pros cons?? Thanks so much guys!

wow my appologies.
Ok, im going to be welding aluminum intercooler pipes no more than 2 mm thick, and also stainless steel exhaust piping. Down the road i will also be fabricating intake manifold which could be 4 mm thick. sorry about the confusion.

I think you need to assume you'll need filler wire, unless your joints are VERY well fitted, the right kind of joint, and you are a top skilled. Even then, that rod needs to be handy...

I don't think snowcat was confused: you asked a simple question which had no chance of covering a very involved subject.

Well your need to be useing a filler wire to start with, You have the correct tungstens of the right sizes? The fillers should always be as close to the original meterial as posible, The aluminum will require some practice to get the weld pools correct practiceing footpedal control etc, Your stainless again will depend on the grade of meterial on the pipe. My advice would be to get yourself an assortment of fillers and have a good play around the machine on a variant of meterials and thickness, start off just sweating the meterial then do some simple butt welds, Sorry for a slight vagueness of the post however tungsten size, type, gas lenses, collet size, flow rates, ceramics, and fillers are massive subjects. Once you get the machine up and running and put some welds in post the pics up.

Also check if the filler wire is rated for high temp operation. 5356 can not be used on things that operate over 150F. 4043 is not as strong, but can work at elevated temps.
