I want to strip the underside of my car. it has factory mastic undersealing throughout. Its a off white/beige colour and about 2mm thick. Its gone scabby and cracked in places and surface rust has started on the exsposed metal. SO I want to remove the lot and recoat starting with zinc primer on clean metal.
I searched on it and found that the tried and tested is a heat gun and scraper, followed by a final clean up with white spirit. I don't know much but that sounds like a nightmare unless the shell is stripped and on a body roller...which isn't the case here.
Some thought that no amount of grit blasting will touch it but some said it was a question of cfm...I was told by a pro that 300 would easily remove it with jblast chelated iron.
Another fella said he'd heard that blasting it with dryice makes it brittle enough to chisel off in no time...
What do you think? how on earth do I get it off with minimal effort, exspense and trouble?
using a professional is out as ive no company local that will do it. The local firms would rather stick to cleaning brickwork which they get enough of not to need to mess around under old motors...one bloke said he could only do it for 500 quid and even then he wasn't keen and suggested I hire a big deiel compressor for a day and do it myself. I rang HSS who do a 125cfm for 130 a day so I called him back and said would it do he said it would take all morning rather than an hour with a 300cfm machine but yeah it would do it.
I worked out that a gun and grit will cost another 100 so its a £260 option - not realy that atractive concidering the effort involved and no guarantee it will actualy work...
Any ideas?
