opinions please...budget winter tyres or high quality summer tyres?

will need new on the megane soon and dont know whether its worth getting cheap winter tyres and then changing them around april or getting a good set of something more towards the higher end summer tyres using the the (fuzzy) logic that high end tyres are going to be better than cheap ones

Hi I have Avon ice touring on my van (berlingo) and Avon ranger ice on the disco.
Have been running the van on the winter tyres all year round for over 3 years now, they seem to last just as long as the original michelins I get about to 55-60k out of a set of 5 with regular rotations. I know you this is probably not recommended now but if you don't rotate then the fronts are knackered after about 25k.
No idea on mileage on disco yet as only fitted in October.

Cheap & cheerful for me.


The last couple of weeks, weather permitting, I've been working on a roof. Steel beams, hinged doors, and sealed round the outer edge
with galv sheet. The rest of the roof is old tiles done by the builders and it all blends in to a very old barn. Everywhere you look you spot a nail,
and the tyres on my Passat are no exception.

The Firestones are down to a couple of mil off the wear blocks so with two punctures I think a set of four are in order.
I've gone for Uniroyal RainExpert at £46 each ( 205 60 R15 ) as I don't see the point of spending more.

I had bridgestone summer tyres on my car with 5mm tread depth,and when I started sliding backwards on an A class road a few years ago I decided to change to all weather tyres, as I do a low mileage and wear isnt an issue as I get about 8 years to a set of tyres.

on one car Ive got Goodyear Vector 4 seasons and on the other car I've got hankook optimo 4s tyres

Winter tyres make a big difference in slushy conditions.
I have little tyre sideline and do them for friends and family. ( got a machine & balancer ).
I buy all my tyres from Camskills or black circles both are the cheapest prices available.
If you don't want to change then just buy all season tyres. They both do all makes. I would recommend staying away from cheap budgets, the stopping distances on some of these things under wet braking is shocking

Fitted new tyres all round on my Smart the other month. Look like the ones that they replaced but marked as M&S ! These are 40 profile so not what you'd expect.

this is why i dont want to spend a lot on winter tyres. at the moment i have cheap no brand tyres that have lasted 5k and they are on the verge of being illegal, i have noticed the front wheels spin in the wet if im pulling out onto a roundabout quickly, i have also notice a bit of understeer in the wet but still only get oversteer if i really try whcih isnt often in the megane incase something breaks.

will have a look at some all weather tyres and see whats about in a 205/55/16

Both my son and daughter in law track their MX5's and "bang for buck" the Uniroyal is the tyre they use, so they come recommended.

I am in the same boat. Need new tyres before winter but don't do enough miles to justify winter tyres really. It's a 4 wheel drive D40 navara so I in snow it's not a real problem anyway.

i would go with the bridgestones they look like swop overs we used to do that fleets would specify what tyres and we had to swop them over dealer took the other makes tyres back

i was going to put the tyres off the alfa on the megane, already swapped on as it needed doing for MOT but i can remember the alfa being very slippery on wet roads, i thought it may be my driving that did it as i like a bit of lift off over steer, but the tyre i have put on the megane (front passenger) will spin with ease when pulling off in the wet but the drivers side is as normal so maybe they are just crap tyres in the rain?
