Thursday afternoon last week I was preparing the Kia for a shed hauling session to East Anglia on Friday morning and noticed that I had a strange bald patch , not only on my head but on the LHF tyre wall tread area .
Concerned that I may have pot-holed it rather hard a few days previously and may have damaged the tyre I had to call RAC ( I'm too bust up nowadays to change my mind let alone a wheel )
RAC man arrives ..looks at the tyre .." Hmmm yes, good call you need to change the tyre and get it replaced , I'll have it done in a jiffy " .
Tyre is changed & I try to get a replaced one ...Long story not worth bothering to tell .
Friday morn I use the caravan mover ( " Thank you Jesus " ) to get the shed in place and hooked up . We then do a steady run to Peterborough , stopping after 1/2 hr or so in services to check everything is OK ... nothing untoward so we progress stopping about every 2 hrs to check things and " Have a natural break you guys ", sort of thing.
Dropped the shed off at Ferry Meadows site and go to see the first of 10 or so friends and family .
Coming back to the site at 23 : 44 just a mile or so away we hear a brrrrrrrrrr , brrrrrr sort of noise like a flat tyre but no drag on the steering .. stopping the car where safe I did a check and everything is OK all tyres good and fully up .
I start to drive the last bit and at the last roundabout to the site the noise comes back with a vengeance and then disappears as I slowly drive the remaining 500 metres to park up . Just as I turn off the road to the grass pitch there is a godawful bearing shot /half shaft type grinding noise . I slowly edge up to the caravan and park up .
Called RAC at 07:15 and a guy is with me in 15 min or so ..takes one look at things and says ." There is a common fault with Sedona's they pick up a stone in the air fins of the disc and it grinds away at the caliper ...OH my God come and look at this ".
Lo and behold the earlier RAC changed over wheel is missing three wheel nuts and is held on by two that have about 3/4 of a turn before they come off as well.
Now I stood by the first RAC guy who changed the wheel and he did it almost exactly like I used to but did not revolve the wheel once he had finger tightened the first nut so it was at the bottom of the wheel , he used an extra deep socket in his hand to pretighten ready for torquing up and lowered the jack to put weight on the wheel to effect the cross diagonal tightening sequence to the final torque settings .
My guess is that he did not have the wheel rim snug on the hub lip before he lowered the jack ....... but what I did find out that he did not advise me to have my wheel nuts rechecked for tightness with in the next 100 miles .... there is a box on the call out sheet that should have been ticked indicating the re tighten check and it should have also have been verbally conveyed to me to have it done .
The second RAC guy asked me for a copy of the initial call out and showed me where it should have been checked .
After spending most of yesterday at a Kwik-fit centre waiting for a new wheel dish and tyre they also told me of the need to have the wheel re torqued before 100 miles of driving were exceeded .. No places exist on the A14 /M6 route I take.
In all my 15 years as an apprenticed & City & Guilded mechanic I never had anyone come back after nearly losing a wheel ..is this a sign of the times ..you cant trust anyone to do a decent job these days .
It looks like I've got to go and buy a 100 to 103 N/Mtr torque wrench so I can beg someone to do as I ask after my next tyre change .
Any thoughts on what I've said ......feel free to comment
