Ok, so my uncle gave me a single axle 12' x 6'3" utility trailer. It has an old mobile home axle that measures about 95" outside to outside. Eith 3500 #, or 6000#, not sure. I have ordered new hubs/bearings for both sides and should be able to tow it by the weekend. Problem is two fold: 1. It's much too wide for what I want. I'm looking for about 5', maybe 5.5' wide, length is ok. 2. the thing weighs a ton! It's made mostly out of 3" angle iron and is nearly more that my 3.6 v6 Tacoma can pull. Should be ok for the few times I'll be using it.
Question is: Can I cut the axle to the desired length and re-weld it with supports? Will I loose any/much strength?
Will I be better off making it useable, cleaning it up and selling it rather than having to shorten the width of both axle and frame? Anyone else messed w/ one of these axles?
