Just for a bit of fun!!
Tools and/or machines youneed errr, I mean would love to have, but don't (yet) have [or can't afford], or have no space left to accommodate..... )
I'll not expect too many things posted by our professionals on here as they probably have all they need, although they're certainly not excluded, but I'm thinking more about us 'amateur/still learning lots' Members. I'll start the ball rolling.
Yesterday, as you may have seen in the "Stuff I have made today" earlier, I needed to separate the different parts of pistons so that I can degrease, clean, and polish them up to make more clocks [yes, I'm still doing those when I can get the pistons etc.]
@8ob kindly sent me a supply some time ago , but now they're all gone . Now, the ones I had from Bob had either circlips or sprung wire rings holding the gudgeon in place , so no problem with dismantling. Some did need penetrating fluid and a drift to remove them but it was no big cause for concern .
However I was lucky to get 4 x Ford pistons etc from a local chap a week ago - short-stroke engine out of a car I assume, that as he runs stock cars, but also has a van These, however defied all efforts and I began to think that penetrating fluid, LOTS of oxy-propane and the use of my friendly BFH were going to be needed - including the help of a neighbour to hold them while I 'had at it' [because my wimp of a vice isn't big enough to hold the piston while applying the 'persuasion' . Google told me that these are simply pressed in and only hold at the pin, moving freely in the piston casting(s).
Anyway, I remember seeing a new hydraulic press at my MOT garage across in the other village, a mile away. Given that I wanted to take the car in for him to investigate a very slooooow air leak, I stuck them in the boot, intending to leave them with him [I could tell he was very busy as there were cars everywhere and one up on the ramp being worked on] until he had time to press them out, or I went to get the tyre seen to.
However, he said "just go through and use it yourself" ! Set it up, fitted the appropriate-sized bush and all had four done in ten minutes - a job that would have taken ages back at the cave.
Happy chap, me!!!! I'm pretty sure it's this one to which you'd need to add the adaptor kit at another £33+ ,if you didn't have a lathe or suitable sockets etc .

I'd love to have one, but space is a big factor. I suppose I could make a bench-top one myself if I could source a ram [rather have that than a jack operating above the job , although that would do the job effectively]. Maybe one day......
And before you ask how I'm going to reassemble them after all the cleaning etc without bothering him again, I have a Baldrick plan.... The simple expedient of turning a few thou off the gudgeon pin where it passes through the conrod. Seemples. It should just be drifted in easily then.
BYW, if anyone has pistons, I'm happy to swap for beer tokens, or the same arrangement I had with Bob at his suggestion - he sent them up to me FOC and in return I sent him down a completed clock with which he was happy [or he said he was ]. Shout if you have any, please .
In case you missed them in the "Stuff you have made today" thread a good while back, wondering what they look like, here you go [they now have felt on the bases to prevent scratching furniture, doesn't do any harm to be sure, to be sure .....]
All that aside, over to you chaps/chapesses for 'stuff' youneed want
