My dad has an issue with his Tigstar 160. It won’t strike an arc on either ac or dc since he connected a 1k pot through the remote plug when he was building himself a remote foot pedal! I’ve confirmed the switch connections for local and remote are present.
The only drawing I can find is below and the colours and everything else seem to confirm the drawing is the correct one for the unit if not a little poor in resolution.
I have a feeling he may have just disturbed something as when I got there the fan wasn’t working which I traced back to a loose spade crimp!
When he keys the torch the contactor pulls in and I have confirmed all contacts on the contactor are good, the hf box seems to whistle when it should be putting out juice but not sure how I can confirm the HF is ok as I’m not sure what I should be measuring at the sleeved ends on the back of the front plate. Gas valve is opening as it should. All I know is there is no voltage there at the tungsten so I’m thinking the main heavy transformer is not being told to fire up. The smaller transformer is working just fine with a 240 primary and 2 x secondaries which are a centre tapped 36v supply and a normal 2 wire 24v.
My dad did replace 3 of the larger capacitors inside a few months ago as they had popped but ironically it was still working. It’s been fine since. When he fitted the pedal it was only giving him max power with no adjustment which led me to think he had connected the pot incorrectly. Looking at the drawing I told him to connect the wiper to the white wire on the remote front plug as that should replicate the wiper on the internal current pot when switched to remote. It’s not worked since!
I found the drawing in here.
