Has anybody any experience of touching up a few dozen small areas of damaged paint on a Bailey or other caravan where four large logo style transfers have been finally fully removed ?
The glue was so baked on the painted metal it would not soften enough with me using a hair dryer to peel the transfer bits off in one go .
I ended up using :-
Meths on a soft lint free pad ...... which took the paint off to metal down to bare aluminium at the first light wipe over , it didn't touch the transfer plastics or glue residues one iota..
White spirit ... hopeless ......barely made a smear on the glue .
Tar remover ... supposed to have been the bogs dolocks for removing logos transfers that have a glue backing coat .........waste of £11 , it didn't do anything at all other than remove some of the top layer of paint like "T " cut does .
90 % Isoproponal whoops bare metal onthe first wipe
This was me using them on their own on lint free soft makeup remover pads and with a hair dryer , live steam & cooling steam about 3 inches away from the transfers as well as clean pads soaked in the various agents .
The final try that succeeded best but was still removing some traces of paint back to the bare metal was a non white spirit low volatile paint brush cleaner from Lidl that is like a liquid soap .. I gave it some steam and using the cleaner neat on the pads I was able to gently get the glue mobile and breaking up in tiny strands of snot which I was able to steam /blow off the body work . Stil made a few small bare metal marks though.
My question is whilst the truly bare aluminium is showing do I need to etch/ prime it then do a white primer , base & top coat or are modern body touch up paints a simple spray & go jobby ?
Any advice please ..I'd like to make a decent job of it using my new air brush kit ( Purchased this afternoon for the job ) . There is far too much to redo than could be done with a fist full of touch up pens
Finally If anyone knows the paint code for a Bailey Ranger s 500/5 in white made in 2009 can you tell me please ?
Thanks
Dave
