Thorium, slightly radioactive, needs to be ingested or inhaled to cause damage, skin contact safe, fallout from grinding is the potential source of problems.

How careful should I be. Dedicated grindstone, dust extraction etc, are to impractical for me

What about Cerium, seem like a good alternate but are much harder to locate (on line at least)? are there problems.

currently using a cerinated tig which came with my kit, seems to work just fine

You can buy the "Gold Tipped" multi strike tungstens from any decent welding supply shop. They are non toxic and able to be used on either AC or DC.
