Hi there, my name is Vaughan and as so many on here I'm looking for a bit of advice on buying/repairing a MIG.
I'm self taught to a point other than some basic stuff we did back in the first year of my apprenticeship but I've kept my hands in over the years and can weld car bodywork to an ok standard, but I've never really had a good set up of my own.
When I've tried welding with a well set up bit of kit I can't get over how much better the results are.
I currently own* a Telwin MIG 180 circa 2000, I say own because my mate lent me it about ten years ago and despite repeated requests to return it to him, he always says "keep it until I need it".
The Telwin is a good machine and served me well for a number of years, it still works from when I used it last but I fancy I need/want an inverter MIG, however I'm not sure I want to invest more than £400 in one. I like the look of the r-tech range and I've been keeping my eye out second hand but whenever I get closer to buying one I seem to miss out as people won't let them go!!!!
It will be 90% for car bodywork so a machine that goes to low amps would suit fine.
I'm a mech/elec multiskilled engineer working within the car industry so I have the abilities to repair/improve something a bit cheaper but I don't want a total dead duck of a machine!!!
Any suggestions welcome.
Cheers,
Vaughan.
