I'm wondering what people think are the best locking pliers (vice grips, mole grips etc.). I used to have a pair of 8" Vice Grips that were pre the Irwin take over. Fantastic tools and after about 10 years of hard use (as in old trucks/land rovers, building work etc.) the jaws were still sharp and useful.
But then I lost them . So I bought a new pair, this time with Irwin stamped on them. These are a POS, the first job I used them on (grabbed a standard HT bolt) the jaws deformed. Now after a year of general use they're basically useless. Not impressed with Irwin.
Now I just purchased a pair of 8" Knipex ones for work. An experienced mechanic said Knipex were the go (made in Germany). But I'm disappointed with these. Quality feels and looks less than the Irwins - they're overall rougher. And the jaws are no harder.
I've seen old Elora ones lying about places, these don't impress me either.
So now I'm thinking Snap On. But I don't want to shell out and find these are no better.
What have others found - is any one as fussy/anal when it comes to the perfect vice grips? Or even better - does anyone have a pair of pre-Irwin Vice Grips in GC they want to sell me? I guess not after reading that...
