Apologies for a thread you've probably all answered before, but I can't seem to find much clear information on what I should do.
I'll be respraying car panels, off the car, in an empty garage. I'll sheet up the garage to avoid as much dust as possible but I'm fully aware this is DIY job by a novice.
I have a Clarke Airmaster Tiger 14/60 which should give enough performance for HVLP guns. I'll be painting a front wing, front door, rear door, bumpers, side skirts and spoiler for a 1994 Saab 9000. Colour is a mid-grey metallic clearcoat (Platana grey to be precise). Panels are second hand except the spoiler. Doors and wing are obviously steel, bumpers and skirts are polyurethane and the spoiler is, I guess, ABS (lightweight, not at all flexible, hollow sounding plastic). The doors and wing are white, and the bumpers and skirts dark blue.
So, I'm pretty confused about the paint options at the moment but I know 2k is completely out of the picture due to the H&S issues, so was thinking 1k acrylic might be the next best and closest to original (guess original probably was 1k actually?), and from what I can find on the web seems vaguely suitable for DIY spraying. I'll also need a rear quarter and boot lid repair done so would like to be able to give the paint to a bodyshop for them to work with and blend in to the existing paint. Is 1k acrylic a good choice?
Lastly I'm unsure what to do for panel prep. The paint on the panels is tired but has had 15-20 years life, should I be taking this back to bare metal and starting with etch primer, or will there be no disadvantage to sanding the existing paint down and starting with high build primer or other primer if recommended? Thinking about it there are probably areas of stone chips and surface rust around the bottom edges so should I be taking it all back and starting afresh?
The bumpers will need a bit of work and have some deep scratches, but having never 'properly' painted plastics before I'm very nervous about this bit - might have to ask in more detail when I get to that stage!
Many thanks for the help, seriously appreciated!
