Stuck taper

The chuck on my new drill is worn beyond use (about 1 mm of run out on even the shortest drills). There's no slot to put a drift in so I used a drift between the back of the chuck and the end of the spindle. This pulled the chuck off it's short taper so I now have an arbor stuck in my drill.

How do I get it out?

Are you sure there is a taper in the spindle as some don't have one. Which would likely be the case if there is no extraction slot.

The problem is likely the drill chuck anyway but like spark plug said probably fixed

Maybe if it's OK, you don't need to take it out whether it's there or not!

I bet it's a fixed taper. Good news is that so long as it's never been spun you can now fit a new chuck. Bad news is that you better check the taper for runout after using one wedge to drift the old chuck off.

No way does it have a taper in the spindle.

Not ideal to use one wedge but it will probably be okay

Long time ago I took apart my little atlas, I remember a stumpy taper one way the other!

Male or female, easy to check

Incredibly, I picked up a set of brand new unused morse taper reamers in a job lot if you need one. Better check to see if its a Morse or a Jacobs first!

Some sizes are almost too close to measure. If it doesn't have a slot, it's probably a Jacobs chuck with a semi permanent Jacobs taper fitting. Its semi permanent becuase typically you can only fit a Jacobs chuck and typically leave it forever.

I got it the wrong way round then.

I took a little cover plate off the end and it does appear to have an integral make taper, which is a shame as it's got some scoring and around 8 tenths of runout.
Whether it was caused by me removing the chuck or it was already like that is moot, but it's a seriously nice drill and it needs fixing...

How do I fix it?

The only way I can think of would be to dismantle it all and remove the spindle, then cut a smaller taper/thread.

The only way I can think of would be to dismantle it all and remove the spindle, then cut a smaller taper/thread.

Run the spindle between centres on a lathe or grinder and turn or grind a fresh taper on it. You'll need a good tight lathe with a good tool and some practice runs on scrap to get the angle and finish right before attacking the spindle.

Polish the high spot out till it runs true use emery cloth supported by a file.

Use blue to keep the correct taper

8 ten-thousandths.

I'll try to remove the spindle tomorrow and have a few practice goes when if I have time.
When you say a grinder, do you mean a cylindrical grinder? Because I don't have one.

There's always a possibility the design may have changed slightly over time. Nowt's ever a guaranteed fact with older kit.
