We fitted a Hobbit stove a while back and wanted a surround to finish the look. I know there are light metal trims available, but I wanted something a bit more substantial as we didn't plan on a putting in a separate mantlepiece.
I happened on a piece of what I think is real wrought iron (it has fibres visible when cut and bent). Then for a contrast some stainless angle for the verticals:
I like the dark colour of the old metal and the way it's almost a threshold from the room to the darkness of the chimney. That plus the sense of the age of the metal - the stainless steel next to it wasn't invented when the old metal was made most likely.
The wrought iron as I think it is might have been a wheel tyre once upon a time - it is convex on the side facing the room and concave on the reverse.
