I know we have a few chainsaw (and 2-stroke in general) experts on here, so I thought I'd ask.
This morning I got out my Stihl MS180CBE chainsaw, mixed up some fuel, fired it up and chopped down a dead willow tree. Chopped it up into logs and then shut the saw down and went and had some lunch. After lunch I topped up the fuel and chain oil, and went back to tackle the next tree. But it wouldn't start. I've had this saw for about 5 years, and it has never failed to start. It's in use quite often too.
The spark plug is wet with fuel, and the exhaust muffler has petrol in it. So I can probably rule out a fuel pipe or pumping issue. I dried the plug out and clamped it against the fins, and on pulling the starter there's a strong stream of sparks there. So the magneto and spark plug are probably OK.
I've tried it with no air filter or muffler in case they were blocked, but still nothing. It just spins over (the CBE has the Elastostart pull starter) and spits fuel out the exhaust port. I've also cleaned the carb and checked the linkages.
The fact that it was running nicely before lunch, but not after is what's confusing me more than anything. Any ideas?
