No, I broke a piece off of the wire tensioner, which tensions the rollers together. I was a bit heavy handed with it. Do you have any idea of where I could get spares for it?
Yes its the plastic thumb piece that you screw down , i was having problems with the wire spead stopping and bending the wire where it leaves the welder so i was messing round with the screw , but i think now that it was the tip thats making it hard for the wire 2 push threw causing it stop and start and then bend the wire as you may have guessed im new 2 mig wished i kept to the stick at the minute .The powershack i bought on ebay not sure if it was a good idea or not when working seems ok to use but very fussy what they weld arnt they.
If its just a thumb wheel, assuming the spring is not part of the knob, no reason why you cant fit a suitable wing nut with a washer or something similar. Unless its a more fancy feeder. Any chance of a pic?
Thanks 4 that idea ive done what you suggested works fine, also put a new tip in and all seems well and good . This next question may seem daft but what difference does it make if you use a larger tip than the wire you are using as i only had a 1.0 tip but im on 0.8 wire ?
Using a 1mm tip wont make much difference to be honest. Although you may get a few false starts at low currents- the tip should be a fairly good fit as its what transfers the electricity to the wire.
I know Malc recommends using a larger tip to help prevent burnbacks, but i always use the right size upto about 200amps+ or for long runs of 3/4metres+. The larger tip then has room to expand a bit without binding the wire.
Oh right i think i may get some spare tips then which are the right size, im not sure which wire size i should use really a freind said i should try 1.0 wire as im only welding on farm machinery and its normaly fairly thick metal anyway , not like light car panels. where do you think is the best place to buy tips from my local BOC dealer seems to have a good selection of goodies to choose from, are there any tips that are better than others as there are some on ebay cheap but i dont know if they are any good or even if they will fit. Sorry i ask you question after question but you always have good answers to give .
Well, if you doing agricultural stuff, some of the welds will be reasonable, so false starts wont be a problem, either size tip will be fine.
There are various types of tip, various lenghts and threads.
If yours is a 300amp machine im guessing you have M8 tips that screw into a tip adaptor rather than straight into the torch...?
If you have a local welding supplies place they are often cheaper than boc.
If you find one, just buy a bag of 10 or 20, will be much cheaper than buying blister packs of 2 or 3.
As for quality of tips, i think they are pretty much all the same.
