Firstly Hello and a great site that I have been viewing for about 3 months.
Finally taken the plunge and am back at college doing C&G in Mig and Tig, and loving it. A cabinet maker by trade so somewhat different in every way for me apart from some kind of manual dexterity required?
I sem to have been hooked by the Portamig PR machine and got the details from Weldequip yesterday (thanks).
The question is this... My workshop is newly wired with 30amp dedicated supply to round blue 30amp plug (did this just for welding and compressor) but not to be used at same time.
I am welding at college 6mm or 1/4" plate and will do this for my mad hobby... Modified American Jeeps off roading mayhem winch challenge rock crawling type of thing. I need to be able to fab winch mounts and chassis mods and bumpers (from 6mm) and still be able to turn the wick down for body panels and exhaust mods/ repairs.
I see the Portamig 235 can go down to 15 and has slow blow fuse of 25A
so would this be the one to go for???
Or am I over-egging the pudding and do not need to go as macho on the power front.....????
Others I have spoken to (not on the forum) have said go for the most powerful Mig welder you can afford!!
I guess I am fortunate for once in that I have just sold a woodworking bandsaw for the price of any of the Portamigs (less gas and consumables)
So I am just in need of an opinion from you guys out there that use these machines on a regular professional or semi-professional basis.
The machines at college are great but at a price? Kempii 35??? can't remember but 415 3 phase and the size of a sideboard!
Thanks all Jez
