Sharpening drill bits?

Can any Mods or users point me in the direction of a thread im sure i once read on here regarding the sharpening of drill bits?

Im quite sure it was on here somewhere,but for the life of me i cannot find it??
maybe it was a figment of my imagination lol.

If the truth be the latter then can anyone pass on any tips on the said subject??

I recently bought a small pile of bits from the local booty and some of them have slight 'channels' ground into the cutting face?

ive never seen this before but when i use them the swarf seems to come away from the hole a lot neater,and also the cut seems faster and cleaner too.

I think you are refering to what I understand as "thinning the point" On large (and small) dia drills this creates a extra cutting face. Or extends the cutting face (almost) across the centre of the drill. Best example I can think of is something like the face at the centre of a slot drill milling cutter.

or you could be talking about chip breaker type flutes on the drill. These look like ground channels following the flute profile

If what your looking at is hand ground then it could be point thinning which is reduce force necessary to drive the drill in, you can't overdo that, you might weaken and break the point off. But more likely it has had it's rake reduced for thin plate cutting. Any standard rake drill will produce a rag on the underside of a plate which will get pulled up the flutes if it's not clamped down.
It's desirable to always clamp down, but not possible for example a large piece of plate on pillar drill table, mind yer pinkies!!!!.

I was given one for xmas years ago, thought it was crap. I do a better job by hand. I keep meaning to list it on fleabay,

I flogged something to someone on evilbay and when he collected it, we was talking, It turned out he couldn't grind drills worth a wonk. So he had recently bought a Dormer drill grinder, he lives close and did "say your welcome to use it anytime";-)
