Setting up Pub bottle

Hi,

I have a 135TE Clarke and just got a co2 pub bottle today (6kg) and a new regulator from MM. Its all setup and i set it to 10 on the flow but when I'm welding it is welding like there is no gas although i can hear the gas whoosh when i press the trigger. The regulator is a twin one and the left dial shows 100-300 bar and it sits on about 60 bar and the right dial goes unto about 40 i think and its sitting on 10

Any ideas?

Are you welding outside?

Hi no leaks as far as I can see and was welding inside the shed.

Is it definitely CO2 and not CO2/N2 mixed?

Easy way to set up the gas
1, temporarily disable the wire feed, by releasing the tension roller
2, back off the pressure control on the regulator
3, turn on the gas valve on the cylinder
4, press and hold the trigger on the torch and at the same time increase the gas pressure knob on the regulator untill you hear a steady flow of gas, even better buy yourself a peashooter flow meter like this one, http://www.weldequip.com/gas-flow-tester.htm
For welding indoors you will probably need about 8 lpm, outdoors in a draft will need more perhaps 12lpm or so, with a small welder like that any more will be a waste of gas,

One thing... When i was using the 390g free bottle the welder came with , I'm sure i didn't hear gas when I'm by the gun even though there must have been for it to weld good. Now i can hear the gas a lot more I'm sure of it although on the flow it was set at 10. Do you think i could be putting too much gas on and thats why its spattering and putting it out sometimes?

was it set at 10 with the welders gas valve open though, setting it static will not give you a true reading, there is usually a gush of gas when you operate the trigger, then it dies off, that's why its important to set the regulator while the gas is flowing

Thinking about it i set it at 10 with the welder turned off lol

Then when i took it to the shed i just started using it. Do you think thats the problem? What flow will it really be pushing out if i did it like i did?

Probably very little once the initial surge has emptied the regulator, try as I suggested and I'm sure it'll be fine.

Just spoke to my dad who was watching the pressure when i was welding and trying to work out why it wasn't welding properly and he said it WAS showing 10 on the flow?

What else could it be

If you have eliminated the possibility of any leaks, then check the flow actually at the torch nozzle, if all is ok there then it may not be a gas problem, some pictures of your welds may help

Just to let you know , it was the welder at fault (a bad earth) as i took it back after eliminating everything else. Got the new one back and it wleds 100% perfect!
