Hi - I hope you have all got garages in this colder weather and darker nights as I am struggeling to find the time for my hobby - I need a car port !
Anyway, It would be nice to get some advice on whether I am doing the right thing before I continue any further.
I have a rusty campervan which has already been patched in places, the chassis is made up of 2mm 'C' section. On one side of the vehicle I have welded over the top an L section 3mm thick, it runs the whole length of the vehicle, the idea is to add strength and rigidity
outriggers had been sliced so the L section would slide in tight against the existing chassis. Before I welded, I sand blasted both sides of the original chassis and painted hammerite rust primer and a few top coats over the lower sections I used weld through primer at the top where the metals meet.
Does anyone think this is a bad move! - as I have heard with this method I am creating a potential rust trap, I hope by sandblasting back to bare metal and treating I have minimised the risk. I further hope to fill the void with waxoil although quite how I am going to sqeeze it in I have not yet fully worked out, perhaps drilling and tapping the odd hole and using a grease nipple.
So, please may I have some views as to whether I should continue and repeat what I have done on the other side of the vehicle or change tactics and go to the traditional method of cutting out the rust and welding new patches in.
Thanks
Simon
