What is the best way to remove zinc from threaded rod prior to welding?
I've used sodium hydroxide to remove aluminium from gummed up cutters before with excellent results.
I'm pretty sure zinc is the same periodic table group and should work very similarly.
The NaOH will not touch the steel. But will happily saponnify the fats in your flesh...
citric acid will work for removing zinc from steel
