Nice easy job for a change, remove a broken bolt, rescue the thread if possible, if not drill out and helicoil. Well as you can guess it hasn't gone to plan. The casting is from a tedder and one of the M12 tine arms bolts has snapped off. I have taken the casting off and mounted in the drill press and started to drill out from the rear as it was easier to mount the casting in the drill - all was going great until about half way in the drill stopped cutting. I appears that their must be a broken drill or something else as hard stuck up that hole as nothing I have will touch it. I don't want to use heat if I can get away with it as it will screw up the bearings. I have thought about using the plasma cutter directly on the stud to blow a hole through it (about 7mm left) and with a bit of luck the heat will go some way to soften the metal, What do you think, am I living in cloud cockoo land.

Sharpen a masonry drill as you would a hss normal drill, because they are TC tipped if you use low speed it will drill it out.

You can get special arc rods for removing broken studs ect, I have some and they work really well. http://www.partsmaster.com/productV...sc=Products+By+Name&pName=STUD+PULL+ELECTRODE

u can get 6mm carbide tipped drills with cutting edges allready for all materials at screwfix for 4 quid

I'd have a go with a sharpened masonry bit. I've drilled a couple of hardened pins out like that and works very well. I'd go for that before the more brutal methods being suggested.

If all else fails can you re-drill all the outer holes inbetween the existing set?
Nice one chaps, the sharpened masonry bit did it nicely. I think it was a snapped off easy out stuck up there, it sure was hard I had to re-sharpen the drill every mm of so. The missus brought me one of those drill doctor 750's for my birthday, its the first time I have used it and I must say I am impressed. The big bonus was that I have managed to save the thread

there good for drilling shortened hss hacksaw blades for the rapidor machine sawThanks for the quick replies chaps, I would never have thought of using a masonry bit, I will have a go in the morning
i buy the 16 inch ones for a couple of quid each .cut them down to 14 inch spot heat the blade with oxyacetylene till red and drill the new hole with the sharpened masonary drill

I saw a you tube vids on removing broken studs etc using a left handed drill bit.
it didn't have a normal tip but some kind of claw effort.
it worked brilliantly.I can't find it now as it was a couple of years ago.
