The thread "Remember when" is most fascinating. I am a Yank and it gives a little look into life "Across the Pond." I did not want to hjack it and started this thread. Friend's wife was from a family of 12 or 13 kids, poor farmers from Kansas. Did not have shoes until there was frost on the ground, still had to wait their turn to get them. Walked to school across the fields looking for warm cow patties to stand in to warm up their feet. See if kids today would do that.
When the family got too big for a single story house they had to do some thing for more room. Dug a hole
at each corner of the house and put a telephone pole in it. Cut the roof loose and jacked it up and built a second story between the top of the first floor and roof. Health and Safety did not see that.
