Does anyone know if I can convert an oxygen or acetylene regulator for use with a shielding gas with my newly acquired mig welder? My dad has the regulators from when he did oxy acet welding few years back.
You should only use a regulator labelled & designed for that particular gas. That's playing it by the book & if it were for use in a works premesis it would have to be that way, otherwise Health & Safety could throw the book at you. For own, personal use you can bend the rules a little! Any fuel gas regulator, ie.Acetylene, Propane definately not. They are only relatively low pressure & will not cope with argonmix pressures. The same applies to CO2 regulators on argonmixes. Oxygen is a high pressure gas so in theory, yes, you could use it on an argonmix cylinder.
Again, I stress, you should only use a regulator designed for it's purpose, so if you blow the side of your garage off it's nowt to do with me!
