I've recently acquired my Dad's old post war Record 34p Engineers Vice. My Dad died about 11 years ago so I wanted to restore the vice and use it. After stripping it down and cleaning it, I was faced with the daunting task of removing the vice jaws. On the 34p it's the 5/16 BSF with the deep taper. Now one of these was already snapped from years ago so I had to drill it out. Here's where I messed up. I drilled it too wide, and when I went to tap it of course, it wouldn't take the thread. I had the genius idea of filing it with weld, drilling again the right size and retapping it. It won't drill. It's gone super hard. I've been and bought cobalt bits and they are barely scratching it. I had the idea of maybe trying to grind a section out and then weld something with a thread back into the jaw and fill the surrounding area, but I don't know. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers.
