Rapid temperature rise causing rust - check your workshops!

It looks like the rapid temperature increase today has caused condensation in my workshop which has never happened before.

Mine is built from insualted panels so I've never had any problem with rusting even in the worst weather and I've got a lot of bare cast iron stuff in there. I just went out there this afternoon and straight away noticed a rust-coloured sheen on my 8" lathe chuck on the lathe. I wiped it over with my hand and the whole chuck has a damp film of condensation on it. Looked up and the whole ceiling is covered in fine droplets.

I've just spent an hour wiping off cast iron stuff like straight edges and reference squares, and then misting them all over with 4 cans of water displacer. If I hadn't gone out there today I'd be crying in my beer becaus some of this stuff would be easily ruined if it got rusted.

I'd advise anyone to check their own workshop if they have stuff out there they don't want to rust because I've never had the tiniest bit of condensation until today.

Ditto. Just done 2 cans of ACF50. Even the concrete floor is sweating.

I was just about to post this very same thing, thankfully I checked the feed. Yes it’s infuriating, a 15 degree temperature rise in 24 hours and it looks like I’ve had a sprinkler on in the garage all day.
Just been in to wipe the important areas down and re-rustproof. I haven’t even checked my measuring gear, presumably that’s all toast… happens quite regularly in my uninsulated garage but not to this extent…

As do I but the rh has been below 50 for the last few days and went up to 60 today, so it turned itself on

Just a few days ago the RH in mine was about 50% or below, it's over 80 now!

Mine is like this all the time sadly. Right by the sea - far too many gaps and too big to run a dehumidifier. All my stuff has to have a liberal coating of oil applied very frequently
Spent 3 hours yesterday pumping out paddling pools and emptying buckets. The cold weather was a lovely break from that even if it was too cold to work on anything!

Not just me then! Even the metal tools inside the drawers were wet!

I was blaming it on me running a diesel space heater on 2 of the cold nights and adding extra moisture to the air.

its nothing new it did it a month ago after a real cold freeze just wiped everything down and the usual spray with wd 40

Big chunk of West Wales is without water due to the rapid temp upshift causing burst mains on the network.

The CEO of DCWW was on the telly earlier apologising and making "working round the clock" noises about restoring water supplies (I assume the same guy that awarded himself £900k or similar Bonus?).
The cynic in me can't help wondering if all the money paid out in bonuses to managers for minimising Spend wouldn't have been better spent actually maintaining the infrastructure

my workshop gear seems ok as been in there a lot recently but my bikes are taking a hiding keep them uncovered to breath a bit, but under shelter and they have been full of condo and wet for days now.

That's a very good call, thanks for the heads up.

Seems we didn't get it so bad down South. Just checked and I am as dry as a bone here. The workshop is very heavily insulated and it was still pretty cold in there so the change was probably quite slow (until I went in there!).
