Like all good projects, this is nothing like what was originally planned, the Esquire frame was too far gone with rust and damage, so I'm using the Courier frame instead.
Special thanks to @Tangledfeet for sending me a big box of bits, some of which are on this project.
I was looking to build a sort of general purpose bike, kind of vintage but I'm a fan of modern tyres and gears. I acquired the 2 Raleigh (plus a 3rd girls type) for very cheap, stripped them down and wondered what to do.
Modern wheels are 135mm wide across the hub, the 3 speed Sturney Archer hub is 120mm, so the first home made tool came out, the nut on the inside left is tightened against the frame to widen the frame. I believe this is called cold setting
Bit more, you have to go over the 135mm and let it spring back in
Now this bend the dropout so home made tool number 2 comes out, more threaded bar and various nut
No after picture but you bend the frame until the 2 flange nuts line up when put together, you can buy a tool but threaded bar is cheap.
This bike didn't have a derailleur so I had to add a hanger, I could get one with a built in hanger but I wanted to use this 9 speed, I also put a washer behind the screw to stop it hitting the cassette
Quick test fit, the derailleur and cassette have been in the degreaser over night
New bottom bracket time, I used the original cups as I wanted to retain the chain guard mount. Also spent the night in the degreaser
Bottom bracket in with new bearings
And the crankset on
Followed by the chain and a modern but vintage looking pedal that I think will suit the bike
That is it for now, I may swap the bottom bracket for a narrower one if I need to improve the chain line
