Chaps,
The railings around the front of the house were removed sometime between 1940 and 1945, and I’m of a mind to replace them. As per the photo, there’s not much left to work with apart from the “stubs” and the posts. I’m not really sure how to go about it but I’d like to create something that’s in keeping with what’s left, as opposed to some shiny new powder coated affair. The stubs are about 9/16” diameter and approximately 4” centres, the posts are roughly 2” square, but obviously time has taken its toll. There’s another 2 posts out of shot to the right, and to the left is a stone gate post that has the end of one of the original horizontals in it, looks to be about 2”x3/4” flat bar, and way over to the left is the other stone gate post and more of what’s in the photo.
Suggestions as to design, method of construction, sources of materials, (rough old black bar would work, if available?), and more importantly how to match the new with the existing, are most welcome.
