Will be starting my wood burner project next week

I have a 19kg propane bottle with a bolt on handle only 3 tiny lugs to cut off

Ill post more pics as the job progresses but for now its in the back garden with the valve left open (4 days should do it) then will fill with water for a day or two

Take the valve out and turn it upside down slowly, there will still be liquid gas in the bottom. Use a drift to loosen it by knocking it round then unscrew it as normal, no left hand thread or anything.

Mr calor PMSL, maybe he knows how to get the bloody valve off cos its doing my nut in! i have it strapped to a gate post so i get no rotation of the bottle, the put the drift in the hole and tap tap tap and nothing! i have even tried heating the thread seal up before hand (valve closed) but still nothing! any ideas??

I have no scaffold pipe otherwise i would have used that!

Why not just cut it out? It's likely to need cutting for the flue anyway

Hi there OZ, thanks for the reply but i have only left the valve open for venting and would need to fill with water before i even thought about cutting into it (safe than sorry)

I used a stilson to get the valve out of mine worked fine and the three different bottles.

Sorted it now thanks to my uncle the Diesel Doc lol he had a pair of 36" Stilsons and a 8' scaffold bar to free the valve!!! was a stubborn ******! its now full of water ready for the big cut in the next few days!

hacksaw does the job. ive got 18 bottles now, all bar 4 need the valves taking off.

Hey all just some more pics so far, i have removed the top lugs and made a hole in the top for chimney, went to local agents to get a hole cutting saw (102mm) and they wanted bloody £30 for it! so went for the drill and cut method hence the mess , i have removed all the paint off the bottle just to save doing it later on, I will be cutting the door and vents tomorrow and will also add the hinges if i get the time.

hard work cuttin a hole like that, make's me reach for the plasma.........

why take the paint off apart from where you need to weld it brns of nicely when it gets going a lot less work

Thanks for the comment Dusty Wish i had a plasma cutter, will do one day tho trust me!

I dint think the wall thickness doubled up near the neck? was over 6mm thick and the jigsaw told me to do one so had to drill first haha

Im a bit of a clean freak Snooper, if i clean it now its better for marking out< and when it comes to putting the heat proof mat black paint on will only need a quick tickle here and there.

how did you get the paint off? will the heat proff paint last?

Hey Noney i used a Polycarbide Abrasive Wheel on my angle grinder for the paint removal and for the hard to reach areas i used a wire cup brush

Im hoping that the heat paint will last quite a while but this will be the first time using it and i quess only time will tell!

If anyone does have experience with using these typs of paints i would love your input ie. what brand works the best and the best finish

Those poly wheels are really good at getting paint off but leaving the metal alone

Another update! Cut the door out and welded the hinges onto the bottle and door, decided to go for a removable ash pan rather than have a door at the bottom , Will be making vents from some scaffold tube and have a scew in type valve so can adjust the air flow.

Realised that after 3 years since i did my welding course i have become so rusty at welding!!!!

first hinge (top) is just like crap! the second hinge seemd to be a bit better guess its my first time welding with a clarke mig so i need to find the setting that works best
