Price of steel

I need to pick up a couple of lengths of square tomorrow but I've got no idea what sort of price I should be paying.

Could someone give me a ballpark of what a sensible price would be for

1 x 6m 12mmx12mm
1 x 6m 25mmx25mm

Realise this is a tiny order and not expecting any favours from the supplier but just want to make sure I'm not paying way over the odds

Don't pay the first price they quote you. They'll try it on!

Like a supplier did to me this week. Invoiced me 100 quid for one length of 48.3 stainless tube. I said i would pay him 50 quid or he could come and collect it. I didnt order it myself, so no price was agreed

Its a pretty small order so you might not have much bargaining room, but you can always play one supplier off against another. They often come down quite a bit.

Non-bargain prices for those would be very roughly £30 for the pair.

I bought 15 meters of 20x20x2 box, cut to length and 11 pieces of 10mm solid round, cut to length (80cm) yesterday for £30. The round came to about £10, a third of the total.

Some profiles do seem much cheaper than others. 20 x 20 box is very cheap. One piece at 3 m was £5.11 Compare that to somewhere like B&Q! I bought all the materials to make trailers sides (6' length) for £70. Half that cost was the 2" weld mesh.

Hi,

I just bought one 6m 1.6x25x25mm box at £10 and two 6m 3x25x25mm angle at £13 each (excl. VAT).

Total cost around £40, it's a bit higher than a year ago but not excessive, I reckon.

I got a length of 25x25x1.6 box the otherday,less than £6 for a 6m length.
Trade, cost price mind.

12x12 square, about £5 and 25x25solid, id guess at around £30. Add some vat, probably £40-£45 all in for cash...

I buy a fair amount of 8mm rebar which is not a very popular size. Consequently my supplier had to buy an entire coil just for me a while back when steel prices were sky high. I've been paying £5.65 a length ex. VAT ever since (in fact, the 10mm was only costing me £5.35!). I've just used the last of the load they got for me and so they've got some more. It's now down to £2.50 a length ex. VAT! Best bit of news I've had in weeks!

When you say "one length of" what do you call a length ?

Yes, stuff like that comes in 6m lengths(normally 6.1nominal)... some stuff comes in other lengths, some boxand tube, comes in 7.5m. While other heavier stuff is available in various lengths, beams, channels angles etc, in 9m, 10m,12m,upto 15.3m.

Well rang round a few and prices ranged from £30 to £43 plus the VAT - unbelievably the cheapest was also the nearest, I'm never normally that lucky

just out of interest and a quick hyjack, whats considered a decent order? im putting together a list for an order of box, tube and plate that will come to near or over £200. this a good price to ask for free delivery or will the guys just look insulted, dont know how much workshops and so on order at once.
have to look online for standard dimensions and wall thicknesses so i dont look like a tool and sound like i know what im talking about

Well, I asked Brundles that question last time I made an order with them. The price (obviously) comes down with the quantity you order. I was spending about 500 that time and I asked what kind of a discount that gives me, she said t wont change much for that kind of thing, their 'big' customers who get the best rates spend about 20k a month regularly.

Having said that, I'm having a lot of luck playing suppliers off each other. I've just knocked about 300 quid pre-tax off a stainless order with Parker Steel (inc some laser cutting etc). Came down from nearly a grand to about 650. Sweet. all it took was 'are you going to order that now, sir', - 'well, I'm just waiting for some prices from a few other suppliers'... etc etc (I genuinely was). They were mega keen to please and have eventually seriously undercut the others (most of whom couldn't do the cutting - guillotine broken / have to send it out for corner notching / we only do straight cuts etc etc). Nice.

Hi,

Kass Steel in Scunny charge 'retail' prices if the order is lower than £40 as I recall.

For instance, five or more 6m lengths of 25mm box would cost me around £8 each but if I wanted four or less then they'd cost around £10 each...all plus VAT, of course.

Other suppliers may have mimumim order prices.

Id expect it varies place to place, decent order if its a big supplier is probably a few k.

I wouldnt bother about insulting them! I think most places are glad of any order however small.
I get the benefit of free delivery whether it be a grands woth of stock or one length of 8mm round (As i did last week!)

you can always check parker steel on the web, and yeah, playing them off against each other works a treat at the minute but what parkers have been doing is quoting silly low prices for gear that isn't in stock and thats a couple of weeks away. they'll honour it mind, if you or the customer can wait. I'm straight with the others when it happens and they'll usually knock me a few quid off their best price then email their offivce and tell them to ignore parker quotes for whatever items are!!!
think minimum order is £100 for delivery with them, but brundles always hit me for a score to deliver as I only get bits and bobs.
