When the rain finally stopped and I could get my welder out of the house and down to the shed, I had a go at running a few beads and making a few joints. Not at all pretty, but for my first ever attempt at welding, I am quite pleased. I need to work on my torch control, I'm struggling to keep the distance from the work the same and occasionally stick the end of the shroud into the hot weld. I'm not sure if it's normal or not, but I seem to be getting quite a bit of splatter and build up inside the shroud and on the contact tip? It brushes off easily enough, not really a problem, but if I can change something, then I'm happy to do it.
Here's the pictures for your judgment, you'll probably be able to see, but in the second picture the long weld down the middle started ok at the top, most of the bead was on top, as the weld moves down though, it flattens out and ends with too much penetration underneath. Power too high perhaps? Although the metal looks rusty under my welds, I did grind a patch clean before I started.
I just realised that the first picture looks a bit like a bead on flat sheet, but it is infact a fillet joining two pieces at 90 degrees.
