I decided to treat my BMW 1100r bike to a new exhaust, just for the hell of it, and ordered a Dominator off eBay. Took a week to arrive, from Poland, but was well packed and seems to be of very good quality. There is a silencer and a connecting pipe, all in stainless. It cost approx £160 but I ordered it in US$ For some reason I can’t remember. They were priced less than that if you paid in £.
It fitted easily enough, perfect fit in fact. So, I fired it up, not too noisy, test rode it, but on the over- run it made a horrible whistling/squeaking sound. At first I thought it was the ‘decibel killer’ device screwed into the end squeaking, as there is but a single 5mm nut and bolt holding it in. So I secured it with a couple of pop rivets.
No different.
So, I pulled the silencer bit out, the ‘decibel killer’, and drilled a series of holes round it to see if it made any difference. Nope, no change really.
Then I tacked a steel washer in the open end, with a 22mm hole in. That did the trick. Touch quieter and no awful whistling.
I don’t like loud pipes, but it is nice to be able to actually hear the exhaust, rather than just feel the vibration, with a slight whisper of it in the background.
The main muffler is the traditional box with a perforated tube running through the middle, so I don’t really see how the decibel killer would work, as all it does is mask off some of the noise absorbing interior of the muffler. It should still flow just as much gas now, as the holes around the outside compensate for the reduced section pipe bit.
