i have had a strange issue come up out of nowhere. i have been doing a tool stand project made from old land rover wheelhub parts and the welder is behaving really strangely. basically the weld is being pushed away from the metal, as though it was opposing magnets. it arcs and melts up and if i am persistent then it will sit on the metal but when subjected to the hammer the weld can be knocked off leaving little more than scorch marks on the work. i managed to get a couple of bits done by turning the wire speed down to try and get a bit more heat in but its not tidy. so i thought it a quirk of the metal and today i tried to fix some hooks to a couple of suspension U-bolts for another part and it did the same thing again, albeit a bit more inconsistently.
it was working fine a day or two before when i made up a couple of gate parts. i am certainly not the best welder but i get by enough for my uses and i can weld well enough for strong (if not pretty) vehicle repairs. i have never come across this kind of thing before though. i did think perhaps it was oily metal and the gas coming out was shielding the metal but i have worked on much worse than this stuff before so it really caught me off guard.
i am using 0.8 wire and argoshield universal gas.
cant do much with it now anyway as my mask has decided to pack in too, which was lovely.
