Hi everyone, So after finally getting my stick welder fixed the other day I was pretty happy. Thought had been running through my head about getting myself a cheap little second hand MIG machine to have a go at it as its the only type of welding I'm not experienced with.
Had a quick gander around ebay and noticed a Murex tradesmig 130 that were about 5 minutes down the road from me.. Messaged the guy asking if we could come to a deal and we agreed on £120 and he guaranteed me that it worked but he had no gas or wire to show it arcing up.
Fair play, I'll take an honest/ genuine sounding man at his word. Popped down the road with a mate, plugged it in just to make sure it at least powered up and fed wire through the torch which it did. Parted with my cash & stuck it in the back of the car, headed on down to the local welding supplier to grab a spool of wire and a cylinder of Argoshield (Picked up one of those little BOC PD cylinders which I'm quite happy with for the price and ease of account set up, In hindsight I should have done this before I parted with my cash for the welder)
Anyway, I got it home and popped a new plug on it as the old one looked like it was past it, plugged in the machine, popped on my spool of wire and connected up the gas. Finally, I can properly test it out.
Got myself a piece of square stock out the shed and connected my earth and went to run a bead.. no Arc. Hmm strange, felt like a bad earth.. tightened it up & checked all the connectors - Fine. Tried again, same thing.. wire feeding and "melting" but not properly arcing and penetrating the metal.
I got a bit miffed but decided I'd leave it until today to take a proper look at. Me and a mate took the side panels off and took a look at the insides which were dirty as anything so we gave it a little bit of a clean and stuck our heads in for a gander. Noticed the power cable looked like it had had its day (all worn and somewhat frayed) so we stripped that out and replaced it with some brand new cable and plug, Maybe that was the problem? Nope.
Maybe its the torch? looked quite old. Grabbed the perfect condition American torch tip company MIG Torch I've got and plugged that in, wire fed but no arc yet again. Not the torch.
I'm thinking its one of two things.. The Euro connector is damaged and something down the line is going wrong there or its going to be a finnicky little thing like a diode blown on the PCB etc..
I'm going to replace the torch connector on Monday when suppliers are open and if that doesn't work it looks like a trip to the repair man.. Betting he'll charge me an arm and a leg to get it fixed.
Before I did that I thought I'd ask you guy's opinion, anyone had this happen? if so what was the solution?
Any help appeciated, Cheers.
