Greetings. This is my first post.
I joined this forum largely because have a car that I am a bit emotionally attached to, it ran out of MOT around this time last year and the holes in the sills meant that I didn't bother even sending it to the MOT shop, I just tucked it into the garage.
I want to fix it myself, so I decided to learn to weld. So, a few months ago I found an ancient (1976 vintage I am reliably informed) stick welder among the inlaws' stuff in my basement and started laying down some slugs. I got that I could lay them to my satisfaction (albeit probably not very well).
Fast forward to my birthday in April and I got clearance to buy myself a MIG set. I got round to placing the order in May and it arrived last week.
Anyway, thanks for reading my life story. I want to learn to weld sheet metal (circa 1mm) so I can fix my car. I have a load of bits of similar thickness stuff which I had left over from scrapping another old car so I've been cutting that up and sticking it back together. There's also some 1.5mm and 3mm angle iron scraps that I have been mucking about with:
As you can see, I made a lot of holes and used a fair bit of electricity. I've played with the settings on my welder and today I cut up and then stitched together a section of roof off the old car. I did a line of welds, but they were crap so I ground one side flat. I then laid another line and was a bit happier and then the 3rd line I thought I was approaching the standard I thought would be OK on a car. I was not bothered about the distortion so I did it in several fairly long sections. Any comments welcome:
Its a new world for me, I haven't used an online forum for donkeys years so I hope that the photos have attached properly.
All the best
