Need less spatter - move over to gas?

Hi -

I've been using my gas-less Clarke 150EN for a good few years now with the gas-less wire and really enjoy what it can do for me.

I'm now in a situation where I need to weld some bodywork/cills on my car which sits on my front drive and I'm worried about the amount of spatter I can sometimes get with the current set-up and the obvious health/safety issues with people passing by.

I've read through the forums and there seems to be an opinion that gas is cleaner and produces less spatter or just changing to a better gassless wire could help (currently use ropey Clarke's own brand). The machine is set-up for both gas and gasless - would be interested in feedback on the best route to go down.

gas wire burns cooler than gas less and is better for car work also splatters less

Right...i will traduce MK's post for you:

Normally when you need to weld car panels, it is easier to weld with gas! the wire doesn't need as much heat to properly melt with gas, which means also you will blow less holes in the thin material!
And ofcourse it will reduce the amount of spatter!

The only thing that worries me a bit is that you are welding outside.....a small breeze will be enough to blow away the shielding gas which will give you porous welds....so you need to be out of the wind when you're welding!

I'm sure there will be more members with an opinion on this!
