Well, today is my birthday and I have treated myself to a new project. I have bought 2 (yes two) Atlas 10"f lathes in need of restoration.
I have been wanting a lathe to play with and learn on for a long time, but all the lathes that have been up for sale recently have been either wayyy too expensive or hundreds of miles away from me.
Firstly I know very little about lathes, my total experience includes seeing how far a chuck would throw its key when I was at school, to about a months worth of basic training when on day release to college when I was serving my time, my work place had phased out the toolroom making all the turners redundant by the 2nd year of my apprenticeship, so didnt even have chance to learn there either.
I managed to pick up both lathes for just over £100 inc a couple of 3 jaw chucks. My plan is to make one good one from the pair, using one as a donor lathe.
Anyhow hope you all enjoy the following pics, sorry in advance for the dubious quality of some of the pics.
The lathe in the shed is going to be my "good" lathe, the one on the stand is the donor, I need to swap the lead screw and gear first, as I noticed that the one in the shed is goosed. I want to build it up and make sure everything works as it should, then I am going to strip it completely and repaint it.
Any advice on this project?
