Welded up the hub hole with 12mm plate and closed off all the other holes with 3mm plate cut to the required sizes and bent to shape. With a tripod leg arrangement fashioned all I needed was some air.
Reluctant to introduce electricity anywhere near fire the solution I came up with was to weld shut some 25mm galv pipe at one end. Drill some holes in the pipe within the bowl section of the wheel and fit a control valve. The other end has fittings to allow me to connect to my 3hp compressor and hey presto we have highly controllable air into the heart of the forge.
Tried this a couple of times with some coal and it's seriously hot. The air pipe is fully removable thus allowing the forge to double up as a crucible for burning logs in the garden to heat the patio or with the addition of a grill on top as a simple wood fired BBQ.
the whole lot cost £5 to make
Also fashioned a heavy block to house my anvil, again made from off cuts of 8x2 and 6x2 timber bolted together.
